You can start with upgrading to Windows for Workgroups and then put
SAMBA (part of the packages for FreeBSD) on the server.  You can put
your printer on any PC, but only use it on the BSD box if it is on
that box itself.  I find the printer performance quite acceptable.
Small file transfers using the BSD machine (486/66 w/EIDE drive) are
not too bad either, but, large files tend to be much slower than
copying files from one WFW to another WFW machine.

On the other hand, you could run the NFS deamon and get some package
for the Windows machines that allow you to redirect NFS to a drive
letter.  THese are called NFS client software packages.  Many commercial
versions are available.
