Can someone please give me an example of how TAR internally uses
compress's -P option?

I need an example of what a command line would look like... The
Unix I'm using is 3.2.4. The book does little to explain this
option; specifically, I get stuck on what they mean by a "file
descriptor" in the following sentence:

"If the -P fd option is specified, compress reads a list of file names
from the pipe association with the file descriptor fd." (Taken from
page 75 paragraph 2)

I believe this command will help me store compressed files on a tape
without having to first compress the files. If I'm out in left field,
please suggest an alternate method. I do not want to store one big
compressed file. I want to retain file names.

I want to add a twist to a question I have in a shell script.

Currently, it prompts the user for a Yes or No question.
I want to have the script resume in 5 miniutes if there is no response.

WHAT command or sequence will let me do this?
Please include an example.

Hopefully;
Kevin Dawson
