Why would this prevent retail distribution any more than it would prevent
distribution via the postal service or a cargo company (I don't think they
provide direct support or copy production facilities).

You'll have to explain why every car manufacturer does this, then.

I have other problems with the GPL, but unless someone at the FSF tells me
otherwise (as they have, unfortunately, done in the past) this isn't one
of them.
