I've just installed MacBSD successfully on my IIvi, and very nice it is,
too. I'm trawling through c.u.n.m for additional info, but here are a few
points I've gleaned which may help.

i. The MacBSD development folks don't seem to comment much in Usenet fora;
they are however, very accessible via their mailing lists. Grab a copy
of their archives from the NetBSD or puma machines. Lots of useful
material there!

ii. PPP works fine on MacBSD. Not terribly well documented, however.

iii. The will/won't work list seems to be a little out of date. My IIvi
is in the 'serial' list, and produces the 'untested' warning, but in fact,
there were zero problems (at least, none attributable to MacBSD!) There
is a well-documented bug with the installer utility as distributed, which
is that it doesn't grab enough Mac memory. Give it more using the 'Get
Info' box -- it crashed on me, first time I tried. That said, I don't
recall that the installer is able to mount more than the root filesystem.
Why would you want to?

iv. There's an updated version of the kernel (netbsd.GENERIC_52.tar.gz,
dated late January) which includes some bugfixes, and might be worth
getting and overlaying on top of or alongside the 1.1 distribution
kernel. I get the impression most of the bugfixes are associated with
the serial ports.

v. IIRC, the mailing list includes mention from the developers that they
have at least partially operating systems running on 040 machines. There's
hope for your Quadra yet!

Bottom line: give MacBSD another try -- it sounds like you were almost up
and running on your IIcx, and it's worth the effort.
