Read the FAQs.

Basically, turn one of the lines with ``ttydX'' in /etc/ttys to `on',
and ``kill -HUP 1''.

RTFM ttys(5), init(8), gettydefs(5).

No need to not use the standard getty unless you care to receive faxes
on an incoming line, or need some of the whistles and bells of mgetty.
