I've tried to get version 2.2.4 for Linux running under 2.1R, but it
chokes when attempting to get a license from our network license
server.

I've heard that the Linux support in -current is improving daily, but
haven't had the opportunity to try it.. I too would love to hear from
anybody who's been able to run Mathematica for Linux under FreeBSD..
