You can use your cpio on Linux to 

find . -depth | cpio -ovB --format=ustar -O user@host:/dev/rmt/0m

(or someting similar)

You must have a user that can make rcp to the hp-system on the device.

Then you get a ordinary tarfile on your tape.

It works for me...
