You may have such problems with an EIDE controller: see sections 2.5.6/7
of the FAQ (the comp.unix.bsd NetBSD/FreeBSD/386BSD version); it
suggests not probing the disk for the geometry (as will happen by 
default) but specifying it using the BIOS. Something about geometry 
translation?
