Hi there,

I have just had this too, having banged my head for 2 days trying to get
2.1.0-RELEASE to install by FTP. (unsuccessfully!)

My 509 is setup in EISA mode (no difference in ISA mode - tried it ;o)
AND WAS NEVER IN PnP mode (so there! ;o)
(aside: whoever maintains the FAQ: please, please, please tell ppl they can
review the boot messages by hitting Scroll-Lock and then Page-UP, once the 1st
colour menu appears - I expect some ppl don't have USENET at their disposal.)

Ok - I got the card to be recognised by doing:
boot> -cv <---- put -v in the FAQ too, please!!!
port ep0 0x4000 <----port address of the card on my machine, seen from
              scroll-lock/pageup
irq ep0 9 <-----interrupt I'm using (different for you all ;o)
visual

(and then carrying on with elimination of conflicting drivers as usual)

THE REASON U MUST DO IT THIS WAY IS THAT THE VISUAL CONFIG MENU ONLY ALLOWS A
BASE ADDRESS OF UP TO 0x2000 THIS IS NO GOOD ON EISA!!!!

at the moment I *still* cant install 2.1.0-RELEASE, cos I get "ERASE PENCIL
MARK" i.e.
1 3C5x9 board(s) on EISA found at 0x4000
ep0: 3c5x9 at 0x4000 in test mode. Erase Pencil Mark!
ep0: eeprom failed to come ready
eeprobe: ignoring model ffff
ep0 not found at 0x4000

now, this is a REAL problem for me, as I want to install by ftp, and am on a
permanent connection. I looked for 2.2-CURRENT, but as I'm in the UK (yes!
;o(
2.2-CURRENT doesn't seem to have reached the UK ftp sites yet
if anyone knows of any fast sites (fast from the UK!!) with 2.2-CURRENT,
please let me know by mail to:

wfn@sn2.ee.umist.ac.uk

If anyone has any other helpful suggestions for a way round this problem with
2.1.0-RELEASE, then please let me know too, @ above address

thanks in advance
