Its in the handbook...

go to /sys/i386/conf  create a configuration file (cp GENERIC <CONFIG>, etc.)
then do 'config <CONFIG>' to create the kernal compilation directory.

cd ../../compile/<CONFIG>, and do 'make' followed by 'make install'.

I'm not 100% sure this was the detail....I'm kind of new to FreeBSD as well.
(used to run Interactive UNIX).
