On your Linux machine, do

# tar cvvf hphost:/dev/tapedrive file1 file2 .....

I did it from a Linux machine to a SunOS 4.1.4. I don't see why HP-UX
shouldn't work. Just make sure it has rmt. If not, install gnutar
on HP-UX. FreeBSD should support it also unless its tar is broken.
In that case, install gnutar on FreeBSD.
