Dont know whether this has to do with your problem, but I 
discovered that the Goldstar CDROM (SCSI Interface) does not
work as it should. It produced checksum errors when installing
from the ports collection on the CD. Workaround that sometimes
helps: copy the dist-file by hand to harddisk and change the
pointers to the file accordingly.
