I'll bet this is actually a hardware problem.  Some internal modems have
exhibited this behavior for me as well, and one of the great evils of
internal modems is that when they do hang, you have to power cycle the
whole machine to get them back.  External modems are a little nicer this
way, and they also don't overheat quite so easily.
