I faced a similar task of locating multiple serial ports for my FreeBSD system
and came across the Chase Research IOLAN terminal server. It has and continues
to offload significant overhead associated with protocol conversion for dialup
users (ie. PPP/SLIP/CSLIP).

The cost of the terminal server is about 1250 if you shop around carefully -
but the suggested list is about 2195. The server connects to your system via
BNC ethernet (or DB15 AUI) connector. You may gets lots of replies on what
multiport serial card to use. This solution seems best for us.
