I'm having a problem installing FreeBSD on my PC, and it's one that has got me
really foxed.

For what it's worth, the system specification is

        486DX2 66Mhz, 8Mb memory, 520Mb Seagate HD (geometry 1027/16/63),
        NE2000 Ethernet card,

and that's about it - it's a computer I use at university. Anyway, here's the
problem. The computer keeps locking up on me while I'm accessing the hard
drive, and I've narrowed the trouble down to the file `root.flp'. I tried
installing by FTP, and when that didn't work, decided to go by DOS partition.
So, I put the minimum installation files on the DOS partition, but when it
comes to copying `root.flp', it will _not_ do it.

I'm very confused by this, I thought it would just be another file. Everything
else goes on OK, but the disk images (`fixit.flp' - I tried this too to see if
it would work) _always_ fail.

I used xcopy, and reading the file _in_ is OK, it's when it starts to write it
to the hard drive that the computer locks up.

Can you explain this, and how I might get round it, please? I have no system
managing experience. Please mail me personally at Simon.Trasler@brunel.ac.uk.

Thanks for your help,
Simon.
