Indeed!  In fact, there's a reverse-engineering project for a free
version of Java that looks pretty promising.  From the README:

                        Kaffe v0.1
                        ==========

This is Kaffe, a Java(tm)* compatible virtual machine interpreter and
translator.  Unlike the current version distributed by Sun's Javasoft*,
this system performs "on-the-fly" conversion of the Java virtual machine
code into native machine code.  This allows execution of Java code at
speeds approaching standard compiled code but maintains Java machine
code independence.
