Why? It was free, and if you want a BBS for it then you either get to
write it yourself, get a free but limited functionality BBS from
somewhere or buy yourself a commercial one. Last I checked, the same
was true for DOS (e.g. all the good BBS systems for it are NOT free).

If you're going to hate something, at least do it for intelligent and
informed reasons.. :-)

As to the options, well, if you write it yourself then you'll probably
find UNIX more fun to work in than DOS, especially when it comes time to
get networking going. If you want a free version then I suggest that
you browse the comp.sources.unix archives - several BBS packages have
passed through there over the years (see ftp.uu.net). If you want
commercial then the only option I currently know about is the MajorBBS
package for BSDI - I've heard it runs fine under FreeBSD.
