I have a matsushita cr-563x connected to my sb-16, and everything works 
just fine...

make sure your cdrom is at hex address 230, you have to set the sb-16 at 
hex 220 to do that...the generic kernel should find it fine then...you 
may be able to tell it to look at a diferent hex address if you use the 
-c option at boot...the hex for the cd is ten above the sb-16' base 
address...I don't remember whether you can change it or not...have a look 
see..
