True, it's just that I never use packages. In fact, I never use anyone
else's binaries, but perhaps I'm just paranoid (or still recovering from
some of the mis-configured ones that come with certain Linux distributions).

Does the package installation update /etc/shells for you? If not, you may
experience various mysterious problems such as not being able to ftp into 
your machine.
