In fact, the original 386i port work was done on a Compaq 386 box.

I wouldn't call that a port to commodity x86 hardware, though; it was
something that ran on that particular box, and that may not have
included, for example, any SunView support for PeeCee video cards.

The fact that it wasn't a port to commodity x86 hardware was probably
due to Sun not being interested in such a port, and not wanting to spend
resources on such a port, rather than such a port not being possible,
however.
