I got the following sytem message :

/kernel: wd0: interrupt imeout:
/kernel: wd0: status 5a<seekdone,drq,index> error 0
/kernel: wd0: interrupt imeout:
/kernel: wd0: status 5a<seekdone,drq,index> error 1<no_dam>

System has 500Mb EIDE plus 2Gb Seagate SCSI disk on Adaptec 2940 PCI
controller

System ceased soon after with disk problems requiring fsck from single
user

Is this indicative of bad memory chips or bad EIDE disk ?

I am assuming the scramble on the SCSI disk is merely a by-product.
