Subject: Errors from tape drive device. HELP!

I am having trouble making a tape backup on my machine. I have tried:
set TAPE=/dev/rst0
/sbin/dump 0ufB $TAPE 1000000 /usr

and

tar -cvf /dev/nrst0 /
and
tar -cvf /dev/rst0 /

but I consistently get errors like:
(tar)
tar: End of archive volume 1 reached
tar: Waiting for tape drive close to complete.st0: media error: medium format
corrupted
done.
tar: tar vol 1, 8 files, 0 bytes read, 0 bytes written.

ATTENTION! tar archive volume change required.
/dev/nrst0 ready for archive tape volume: 2
Load the NEXT TAPE on the tape drive and make sure it is WRITE ENABLED.

The problem is that it has, by this point only shown one or two files. There
is NO WAY that the tape is actually full, and it is write enabled.

I had been told that there was a problem with 2.0 that didn't allow proper
accessing of the tape backup, but I installed all the patches, and had no luck.

I would greatly appreciate any input.
