Steven,
You're probably thinking of NetBSD/alpha. A number of people are
running NetBSD on alphas and are happy with it. It currently runs on
the older 21064 based DEC 3000/x00 series machines, as well as the
newer 21064 and 21164 based AlphaStations & 21066 based AXPpci
("NoName") boxes. There is an X-windows server working under TGA
graphics. For more detailed information about NetBSD/alpha, point
your WWW browser at http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/alpha/index.html
Most NetBSD discussions take place via mailing lists. The alpha
mailing list is port-alpha@NetBSD.ORG and this would probably be a
much better place for this question. You can join this list by sending
email to majordomo@NetBSD.ORG with the phrase 'subscribe port-alpha'
in the message body.
You can also browse the mailing list archives at
ftp://ftp.NetBSD.ORG/pub/NetBSD/mailing-lists/port-alpha to get a feel
for what is happening.
