I don't get the remark 'FreeBSD generates'

It is a2ps that generates this PS. 

You better check out a2ps itself, it should be available in source 
format.

I have seen l3 documents print on l2 printers. Are you sure it doesn't
work at all? And what if you change the -3.0 into 2.0 or something similar?
