Is it my imagination, or is it true that anybody can send e-mail through
any system's sendmail?

I just noticed this today when I accidently left my Eudora settings set
to one provider's SMTP server even though I was connected to another
provider. I was still able to send e-mail.

It ocurred to me that since passwords are required to read mail, but not
send mail, that it must be possible to use just about anybody's mail
server to send mail.

Is this a commonly accepted practice in the Internet community?
