The IBM machine that you're considering is, as you say, quite pricey.
Why not consider one of the PReP compliant boxes from IBM or Motorola
Computer Group?  I'm not 100% sure, but I think IBM will only sell you
the client version of AIX for some of their boxes, whereas Motorola
will sell you client or server.  You can get machines with 604-133 for
a very reasonable sum from both IBM and MCG.
