There should be some base level of compliance, X/Open?  There will be 
divergence to be competitive but taking code from one platform to the 
next should be made a whole lot easier than it is now.

Hopefully most of the divergence would be with hardware architecture. I 
do believe hardware architecture, especially for servers, can make a big 
difference.  Look at servers from ALR and Compaq.

It's possible for Unix to be a whole lot more ubiquitous, hell even MVS 
is UNIX95 compliant now.
