how much are your disks running?

if you are running on only one disk, that is probably
a contribution. split it into two or four disks (the
more the better for speed) and you'll be doing much
better.

the first xtra disk might just handle the history files
and the overview files. that keeps you from having to
do the strange things you need to do with linked (cross
posted) files.

news thrashes the disks because of access time, NOT
throughput. Most of the articles are tiny (approx 2.5K)
and the time is wasted in moving the head over the
disk.

also, make sure you have plenty of memory, since swapping
is a big sucker of resources and further pulls on your
disks.

32MB is definitely short for a full feed. try 64 or
be nice to yourself and get the 128MB

A full feed is probably 300,000 messages a day and likely
uses up between 64-128K of your link.
