Hey everybody....

Pardon me for being a pain but I need some help here. I have been
using Linux Version 2.3 (Kernel 1.2.8) for some time now and I
recently decided to give FreeBSD a shot. I purchased the latest
version (Jan. '95) from Walnut Creek CD-ROM and went ahead with a
beginner install. Here's what I got....

I ran the batch file from the CD under dos which the instructions
suggest if at all possible. Everything seemed to work fine and I got
messages much like those under Linux confirming my hardware addresses,
etc. It even found my CD-ROM to be a FX001 Mitsumi attached at
0x340, IRQ 11. All this is correct and is the same for Linux and
DOS/Windows. Here's the catch... When I set up the hardrives,
everything goes great until I tell it to install it from a CD-ROM.
Then it tells me I don't have a valid CD-ROM device.

Needless to say, I'm a bit confused by this since it did correctly
find my CD-ROM drive and was using it up until that point. I need to
know if there is something I need to do to get around this problem.
I'd much rather install from CD-ROM than from a DOS partition but if
that's what it takes.... I am using a Petium-90 with 8Mb of RAM, an
OPTI PCI Bridge chipset, a Conner 850Mb drive and a Western Digital
730MB drive. My CD-ROM is a Mitsumi Double Spin drive (FX0001-d I
think...it is the one that is supported :) and is connected to my
Sound Blaster AWE32's Mitsumi port. The board is an exact replacement
for the original Mitsumi controller card and it uses the exact same
drivers under DOS and Windows. I tried booting using the '-c' option
to configure the settings of my hardware. I removed everything but
the necessities and I selected the correct settings for those item
which I do have.

I've been fooling with this for two weeks now and it's driving me
nuts. I'm sure it is something very simple but I just can't figure
out what. I really appreciate your time and I hope you can help. Any
and all replies are welcome! :)

-Dave

PS: I would try the old Mitsumi card but the one I was given when I
purchased the drive is a clone and uses different IRQ and Hex settings
than those listed as being supported under FreeBSD. Also, as I said,
the AWE32 has a built in interface that fits the exact same standards
as the original anyway. Under DOS I use the drivers from Mitsumi to
access the interface on the AWE32 and under Linux 1.2.8 it works fine
as a Misumi interface and drive on 0x340 and IRQ 11. *sigh* Ah
well... Thanks again for your time! If you need any more info feel
