I have a similar Archive 2/4gig DAT that does hardware compression.  If yours is the 
same as mine, you'll find compression controlled on the back of the unit.  I don't 
run it on my FreeBSD machine, so I'm not sure how it's used there, but I know that 
all other OS' I've used it with didn't give a damn about the hardware compression, it 
just "went".
