I've once got two Smart UPSen to play with for a weekend.  The
resulting code (a header file describing most of the UPS protocol, and
a small demo utility) can be found under:

	ftp://ftp.inf.tu-dresden.de/pub/people/wunsch/smartups/

In case you're doing further development, please send me your
enhancements back.  I'm also willing to discuss issues of an UPS
monitor with you.
