Running gif2tiff manually (with valid options) produces tiff unsuitable for faxing (not group 3). Other tiff tools do not help either. Imagemagick's convert can produce FAX-file (whatever that is), but sendfax does not take them (uknown file format). The only choice left is convert to PostScript, but that seems to be wastefull.
