We have found that BSDI's password encryption disagrees with Sun's
password encryption for certain passwords, particularly some which
are 7 characters long. I'm told that BSDI doesn't consider this to
be a problem, but we think it's a real bitch when trying to do remote
authentication using a shared password database, e.g., RADIUS or similar.

The solution seems to be to replace BSDI's 'pwcrypt' with one stolen
from the Crack package or elsewhere. At least, that's what I'm trying
next. Thank goodnes for source.

I think Linux's password crypt agrees with Sun's but I haven't tried it
yet as we don't have any Linux systems participating in our common
authentication cluster. If it does, then quite possibly some of the
passwords you move over from BSDI to Linux aren't going to work.
