I got an I/O error on one of the hard disks on my news spool today.
It was an error like:

/kernel: ahc0: target 1, lun 0 (sd1) timed out
/kernel: sd1(ahc0:1:0): BUS DEVICE RESET message queued.
/kernel: fo:6887 asc:4e,0 Overlapped commands attempted field replaceable
unit:1
/kernel: ,retries:4
/kernel: sd1(ahc0:1:0): ABORTED COMMAND info:6887 asc:4e,0 Overlapped
commands attempted field replaceable unit:1
(more retries, more aborted command messages)

Now my question is, is it the hard disk or the controller? I'm using an
Adaptec 2940W controller with a bios rev. 8200. I know these use to be
flaky in the past, has this been cleared up? The time out error is on a
Seagate Barracuda 4GB HD a ST15150N SCSI-2 HD, I have also heard of some
people that had plaguing problems with these.

Is the hard drive failing, or is the controller not handling the device
commands in a friendly way that might cause the HD to lock-up? To see
if it happens again I replaced the Adaptec 2940W controller with a
Buslogic 946c controller. I haven't had any problems in the past with
the 946c, it just ain't as fast as a 2940W. Maybe the speed of the
controller is the problem. Maybe the 2940W dishes out commands too fast
for this particular Barracuda to handle, then it timeout's too quickly.

Any input into this would be a tremendous help.

Thanks,

Ross Walker
