Actaully if you've been reading this really isn't true. In fact it's
almost the opposite:

Linux - kernel is controlled by the benevolent dictator - Linus. We
agree that his take on the kernel is the "official" one. No one has
really tried to release a different "official" kernel. Apps are wide open
to anyone who wants to contribute.

FreeBSD - Anyone can get the CVS tree. Anyone can make changes to their
personal tree. (I'm unclear here) only a limited number of people can
commit changes back to the original tree. As with Linux apps are wide open.

In actuality FreeBSD is more open than Linux. Linus has stated this himself.

The bottom line is they both work.
