Hmm. I don't know about you, but I have quite a bit of luck
doing 'mkfs', 'fsck', and 'mount' -- perhaps the distribution you
were using didn't provide those, but they do exist on some of the
better behaved distributions out there, and have existed for quite
a long time.

   "catastrophe"

And, aside from that, you're wrong. My machine has been running
close to the limit of the power supply (*) for a while now, and it
occasionally goes badly south (like, sigh, today, when both the
news filesystem and the tape drive bought the farm.) When I
picked it off the floor, the only nonstandard command I used was
'badblocks'; I think that your are making the xBSD fanatic mistake
of assuming that all Unices look and act exactly like BSD.

(* How did I find this out? Oh, I put in a third SCSI
controller and the machine started to freeze up and die within 60
seconds of boot. I took it out and lo and behold, it's still running
a hour and a half later, but unfortunately without the poor tape
drive, which was in the throes of reading a tape when the machine
fell over. Sigh.)
