You seem to be arguing that simply because all this stuff is
in the public domain it immediately makes the card 

1) Good. Fast.
2) Reliable.
3) Widely used.
4) Free.

In other words better than the $200 commercial item. Or at 
least you'd need to argue that having everything in public 
domain makes everything else a worthwhile sacrifice..

Then you forget you actually have to buy the parts, then 
build, test and debug the thing.
