Funny, the number of "I need help" postings is much greater in the
Linux newsgroups than in the *BSD newsgroups. Perhaps writing those
manuals creates more of these postings, rather than less.

I don't understand. There are plenty of people out there using FreeBSD
right now, and it's doing useful work. How is it currently getting in
the way of other users?
