My point is that a lot of people who own that funky hardware out there
who never even heard of Linux or BSD are still finding themselves in
the uncomfortable position of upgrading to more competent components.

It's hardly accurate to say BSD is bad because it demands better
hardware than Linux.  Required hardware upgrades are hardly a
characteristic unique to the BSDs.

      The funky hardware is out there, and it's still being
   developed.  The vast majority doesn't really care about the
   standards, as long as it will run on their machines, and the
   vendors making that hardware will happily build drivers so that
   their hardware will be purchased by more people.  Unfortunately for
