Scenario: Telnetted in to my BSD 2.0.1 machine from a Linux
machine through either an xterm or the Linux console.

When I compose a message under elm, I use vi (no comments please).
Anyway, when I hit backspace or delete I get 0x7f all over my
screen. When I'm at the shell prompt everything works fine. I
figure I'm missing something obvious here. Any help is
appreciated.
