Some disk controlers will do this for you with nothing extra needed from
the O.S.  I use a Bus Logics BT-410A EIDE controler and it will do this.
Yea I know, "IDE", yuck!  Anyway they have a version of this card for VESA
LB (BT-410A), ISA (BT-510A), PCI (BT-910A).
