To the best of my knowledge, Netscape doesn't make a version of the
server for FreeBSD (or Linux, which I run at home) because practically
everyone has a different version or configuration of the kernel,
and it would be nearly impossible to support.

I'm not authorized to give you Netscape's actual position on the matter,
but I'll speak for myself and let you know how it looks to me, at least.
(I'm *NOT* Netscape, I'm an actual, living human being who WORKS at
Netscape. :)

Netscape doesn't HATE anyone, nor do the engineers, programmers,
salespeople, executives, or tech support people who make up the company.

You're right, I DON'T know what the differences are - I know that
Netscape doesn't support running the BSDI version of the server on
FreeBSD. - if I knew what all the differences were, I wouldn't be
answering phones and mail, I'd be upstairs programming. :)

(But personally I LIKE answering questions and trying to help where I
can.)

Just 'Ermine' - no 'Mr.' :)
And I have NOTHING against free operating systems, I'm just doing my
job. I don't do Microsoft tech support either, or Nintendo, or Linux,
or anything else not supported by Netscape.

And reading further down the thread, I see that Walnut Creek CD-ROM has
security running just fine on a server running FreeBSD. I personally am
glad to see it, and hope that they can help all of you who are trying to
set up your own servers to get things running properly! :)
