Hi Dave,
I remember the problem but don't remember exactly how I got around
it.  I seem to remember that I made a symlink from X386 -> X11R6
and then tried to install.  If that fails then you could have a 
look in the install.sh script and go through the steps manually.
In any case if you don't have the symlink then mwm core dumps on 
startup.
