Other than BSD/SysV differences in details, the basic concept is 
exactly the same.  For the purpose of getting the print filters
set up, a DeskJet 500 behaves (more or less) exactly like a PCL only
LaserJet.  Of course, you should probably use the desket drivers of
ghostscript rather than the laserjet drivers...

BTW, if you have FreeBSD 2.1, the printer docs mentioned are also available
as /usr/share/doc/handbook/handbook.html.
