If you did the edit of the passwd and master.passwd manually (ie not 
vipw) then you need to have freebsd remake it's passwd/user database.

The command escapes me at the moment, but I believe if you type vipw, and 
make a change, the mkpw_db proggy will preform it's magic and the user 
will canish...

BTW, you aren't running NIS or anything are you? :>
