Its looking for the memory hole so it can stick its fingers through
the frame buffer.

You need to load the drive in /etc/rc.local like this:

KERNDIR=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/kernel
if [ -f ${KERNDIR}/ap.o ]; then
        echo 'Loading /dev/mem access'
        modload -o ${KERNDIR}/ap -e ap -p ${KERNDIR}/apinstall ${KERNDIR}/ap.o
fi

Or build yourself a kernel with the INSECURE option.
