I can't say anything about the current implementation of Linux. There's a lot
of positive attributes about the OS. I ran into a problem last year setting
up a web server on a 56K FR link. The system performed poorly for web page
serving and mail serving (via pop 3). I was going nuts trying to solve the
problem. My client was loosing patients so I replaced the OS with NetBSD. The
differenc in performance was dramatic. My client was happy and all ended
well. The same machine now serves on a T1 link w/o any glitches. Runs months
on end. It only goes down when I need to shut it down for maintenance. BTW the
machine is a 66 Mhz 486 with 32M of Ram.

I suspect Since FreeBSD will give similar performance figures.

Another tidbit on performance comparing NetBSD, Windows NT and Windows for
workgroup. This paper compares a wide range of specifics in these OS. One
interesting item was it's comparison of web page serving. The URL for the
page is at:

http://www.das.harvard.edu/users/faculty/Brad_Chen/ftp_docs.html

The title is:

The Measured Performance of Personal Computer Operating Systems
       J. Bradley Chen, Yasuhiro Endo, Kee Chan, David Mazières, Antonio Dias, Mike
       Smith, and Margo Seltzer
To appear in The Proceedings of the 15th ACM Symposium on Operating System
       Principles, December 1995.

The bottom line is NetBSD outperfomance the Microsoft in the Networked area.
IMHO NetBSD/Unix in general is the best platform for serving.
