edit the file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0

add your commands in here

ie
xsetroot -solid SteelBlue

or in my case

xscreensaver &
pyro -root &

Note if you don't put it in the background the login prompt
will not come up!


If you have other people logging in via xdm then you need to
create the file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xsetup wiht the above 
command sin and add the line


DisplayManager*setup:           /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xsetup


to xdm-config
