this is second-hand, but there is a known problem with
runing the fsck while thrashing the heck out of the disks
with expire or even a feed comming in.

you might call it a scheduling oversight.  many people apparently
avoid running fsck when excercising the disks with inn.  others
re-schedule the two processes so that they don't compete for
resources.  this is apparently successful.
