At the moment I'm trying to gain some insight into this subject by reading
the "Writing Device Drivers" manual that comes with Sun computer systems
(SunOS, not Solaris). Hopefully the info therein will be mostly relevant.
It deals mainly with character devices, not block devices, so should be
ideal for reference to scanners. Scanners are character devices, aren't they?

I've found the SunOS manuals to be pretty damn good reference tomes; it's
a shame they moved over to Solaris :-(
